Saw

Posted by Player under Horror

SawI’m not a big fan of thrillers, but I do love a good horror film once and a while. In Saw, you get a little of both, some truly sick situations and a little bit of a guessing game as to who is the killer. I won’t give away the ending, but at least for me it did surprise me.

The story starts out with two guys that are chained in what appears to be a dirty and abandoned industrial bathroom. As they begin to relate to each other, the pieces of a relationship develop. It seems that they are being held captive by the Jigsaw killer, a crazy maniac that likes to challenge people to kill each other. Did I mention that these two guys woke up to find each other in chains and that there is a dead body bleeding on the floor between them? Well it’s there.

The main character turns out to be a successful doctor who is not particularly very happy in life. we learn that his wife and daughter are being held captive, and that a cop, played by Danny Glover, is obsessed with him and thinks he is the jigsaw killer. Eventually this all leads to plenty of flashback scenes and some scary moments here and there.

Saw has a great opening premise and tries to out do the previous classic Seven, but it falls way short. It’s characters are not very likable, it’s killer is not all that engaging like Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs, and even with actors like Glover, the film just seems empty and devoid of real depth. It’s another movie that shows you a cool What If?, but never really makes you care enough about the characters to really engage your sympathies. It’s an average film.

The DVD includes some cool packaging and there is a nice DTS soundtrack included. Overall it is a well produced DVD release.

Freddy Versus Jason

Posted by Player under Horror

Freddy Versus JasonFreddy Cougar is back, the notorious child killer turned nightmare ghoul and this time he’s enlisted the company of one hockey mask serial killer, known as Jason to help take revenge against the dumber than ever neighborhood teenagers.

Forgetting the big silicone boob victims, the film scores very well in pitting Jason and Freddy against eachother. This is really where the special effects and the real action take place. I would have to say that like most fans, I was rooting for Jason, as he is the more badass of the two characters. Cougar is by all accounts a child praying pervert, while Jason is a kid taking revenge on the world, almost everyone in their right mind would side with Jason.

Story wise the film is not very well written, and the teenagers are not as well defined as in the latest Scream films, in fact most of the teenagers are down right skanky. The main hero of the story is the girl who is living on Elm Street of course, but her character is pretty unimportant other than helping Jason battle it out with Freddy.

Most of the best kills and gore is provided by Jason. The guy just kills so well, that Freddy’s elaborate nightmare settings just end up paling in comparison. I especially liked the part where Jason throws his machete and it pierces a running teenager through the chest.

If you are in the mood for some gore and a little bit of horror, and don’t mind hearing the line, “Welcome to my world bitch” three times, then you should consider Freddy v/s Jason. Even the little grade school kids in front or me were really excited about seeing this film, so you know it is fun when kids are recommending you the film as you walk in.

Dog Soldiers

Posted by Player under Horror

Dog SoldiersHailed by many as one of the best werewolf movies to come along in a long time, Dog Soldiers is a straight up horror film which you probably missed. Dog Soldiers never got a real theatrical release in the US, and so most of us in America will have to catch this one out on DVD. In England it broke box office records in 2001, and it is also a 4 out of 5 star rated film on Netflix.

The film features a group of soldiers out on what they think is a routine military exercise. They are dropped in the deep forests of the Scottish Highlands where they are to engage their mock military target. After some campfire soldier stories, where each of the characters is introduced, the real story begins, as the group tracks back to an area in the forest where they find a massacre. The darkness comes and the werewolves are out on the hunt and so they retreat to a nearby cottage where they intend to hold out until daybreak. Once at the cottage the werewolves begin their picking off of the soldiers one by one.

I won’t go into detail, but the story has more than a few twists.

Some of the best scenes are: when when the Sargeant’s guts are hanging out and Cooper tries to put them back in, and when one soldier tells the werewolf that he hopes he gives him the shits.

The film is pretty intense throughout and though there is no nudity and we are never really told about how or why werewolves exist, it is still a very enjoyable horror/action film. My only complaint is that the video for the dvd looks very grainy, but I somehow doubt this will matter to fans of the genre. On the upside, it is great to see a film that features absolutely no CGI effects and still scares the crap out of you.

Jason X

Posted by Player under Horror

Jason XJason X: This time he’s killing teenagers in outer space.

New Line Cinema released a pretty nice DVD. Jason X is in DTS and Dolby Digital and is pretty clean transfer as far as video. For extras there is a 29 minutes introduction into the world of Friday The 13, with everyone talking about why Jason is evil and why he can’t die.

Film wise, Jason X is your basic Aliens plot, except in this case the alien is Jason and everyone in the crew is a little bit better looking. The year is around 2450, and a group of students discover on Earth a frozen girl and Jason. Since we could not kill him, it was decided to freeze him instead. The teenagers and their teacher, although they are highly evolved are just as stupid as ever and they unfreeze Jason and the girl. Jason soon starts killing people. They throw grunts at him, a vixen android at him, but he still keeps coming back. Along the way the ship is blown up, Jason is resurrected twice, and of course teenagers are killed in various ways.

Of course there are things that don’t make sense like the ending, why Earth is shown to be a horrible place in the beginning and then at the end, an Earth like planet is shown, but this time it looks picture perfect.

Overall if you like horror and sci-fi, this is not too bad of a mix of both genres, but it really is intended for Jason fans. The acting is not bad and the sets are pretty impressive.

For the geeks, Microsoft is mentioned negatively, and even though it is the future an Apple LCD monitor appears. Interestingly the Apple monitor brings Jason back to life. New Line Cinema must like Macs I guess.
