I finally got a chance to watch this film on DVD, and I’d have to say that The Village is not a bad film, in fact it is rather entertaining as a romance. As a thriller or as a scary movie, yeah, it fails even before it starts. I kind of want to compare it to Cold Mountain in which an unlikely romance blossoms, but somehow I think The Village pulls it off better than Nicole Kidman and Jude Law.

The problem with The Village is that it is trying to be something it is not, mainly a scare-me thriller. Perhaps it is not so much that the film is bad as much as its audience is expecting something else. As a reader of 18 and 19 Century novels, this movie feels right, both in its look and in its performances. The soundtrack is subtle and compliments well the characters.

What is wrong is that The Village, never frightens you and even when it does, the suspension of disbelief is just way too out there for most of us to jump in whole heartedly. The scary woods is deader than skull bones, yet these people live off the land, there has to be animals right? Where’s your occasional squirrel, or Bambi?

I would have to say that I liked this picture better than Signs, even though I thought Signs had better moments. The problem for me is that I hated the ending in Signs and in this movie the ending is perhaps not bad, but definitely the whole center of this movie should have been the romance and not the scary elements.

I love Will Ferrell and I am a die hard fan of all his movies that are along the same vein, Old School, Talledega Nights etc. His character Chazz was funny, but at times it was the same character but with long hair and skater tights. When the mascot (or whatever that thing was)caught on fire when he and Jon Heder’s character fought was straight out of Old School. The movie is full of stereotypes, but they are portrayed so over the top you can’t help but laugh. I still can’t see Jon Heder as anything other than Napoleon Dynamite, I’m sorry. He was average at best. Overall the movie had more bright spots than dull, but I think a co-star with more character than Jon Heder would have made the movie more enjoyable. I recommend it. I know what you mean – I stopped going to see comic book movies altogether (with the exception of films I knew would be good like Superman, Batman, and Spiderman) after the hugely disappointing “Hellboy.” No matter how great the material could be, they never seem to get it right. And frankly, the fact that Nicolas Cage is in it doesn’t do much for me. I think he’s talented but the choices he’s made lately have been really questionable. I was fishing around for reviews and found this video review which I thought summed it up well (don’t worry – no spoilers) http://www.spill.com/reviews/ghost-rider/ If I were you, I’d just wait for the DVD.

Anyone else see this movie? I am curious what people think. The reviews have been so mixed. Why is it so hard to make a decent comic book movie?

Other than Dog Soldiers. I have not seen any other films from this director. However The Descent is a better movie than Dog Soldiers. What I really liked about this film was the story and the fact that he used an all female cast. This is quite rare in action horror films and it shows that female characters alone can make for an entertaining movie. The Descent is finally coming out on DVD in the US. Look for it on Dec 26th, 2006.

this was an excellent movie,caves have never been so scary,I just want to know what movies by Neil Marshall in this category there is,I definitely want to watch them
